Lena Lake : May 26-27, 2007. Memorial Day backbacking trip on the Olympic Penninsula with Evan. This was a popular spot, but we were able to snag a pretty nice camp site that felt secluded regardless of the many families and groups camped around the lake. This was a pretty easy 3 mile hike in and then, Upper Lena Lake trail was obscured by some blowdowns, but we explored up that way and I'm sure it would make a nice weekend trip someday.

Dorothy, Bear & Deer Lakes : July 14-15, 2007. Lovely overnight in the Alpine Lakes wilderness with Evan and Jenn B. They say Lake Dorothy gets heavy use and there were a couple of boyscout groups there, but it's a big lake and we camped in a secluded spot at the far end below the climb to Bear & Deer lakes. We had peace, solitude, and a private beach...except for the clouds of black flies:( My camera was DOA, so I've snagged Evan's photos - he gets all the credit for documenting this one! Thanks Evan!

Brooks Range Alaska -Arctic Village to Anaktuvuk Pass - 2008 : ~340 km - 16 days of solitary hiking in the trailess wilderness in Alaska's Brooks Range. An exhausting trip involving difficult hiking over tussocks, many passes, hordes of mosquitoes, crossing many rivers, constant daylight, usually surrounded by arctic flowers. A beautiful and deserted landscape, in terms of large mammals I only came across one grizzly bear, one moose, and fleeting glimpse of wolves. The caribou which usually fill the valleys were on the calving grounds on coast (the place where some people want to drill for oil).

Check them out at: http://www.denveradventures.com/2.html Our hiking guide was Mike who did an outstanding job of leading our hike. If you are going to be in the Denver area check it out for a great adventure in the Rocky Mountains. This was a half day hike in the afternoon and was fantastic! On the way back we stopped at the Red Rock outdoor theather which was below where we hiked.

3rd Annual Lost Coast Backpack 5/08 : 15 of us from NorCal Hiking split up and hiked opposite along the Lost Coast, swapping car keys the second night. 25 miles, 4 days, lots of beach hiking. A day of rain, a day of wind, a day of fog and a day of sun. Always a pleasure to hike this incredible trail.

Ventana Wilderness Backpack 4/08' : Steve, Pavla, Barbara and I from NorthCAhiking headed into Pine Valley for an overnighter. We visited Jack and saw an incredibly beautiful waterfall after a difficult scramble. Jack is full of stories, if you're ever in the area stop by and chat with him (and bring some bacon and eggs) ;) we also saw a ton of wildflowers, a 4 foot long Garter snake, a bunny, deer and a cool lizard. We ate at Phils Fish House in Moss Landing on the way home, funky but oh so good!
